Efficient and resource-saving plastics processing through software control

Through the TwinCAT 3 Plastic Framework, hydraulic and electric drive technology can be seamlessly integrated, providing a powerful modular control system for plastics machinery, which can significantly reduce development work while retaining the proven openness of the Beckhoff architecture. This means that all the prerequisites are in place so that plastics can be processed as efficiently and sustainably as possible, while high-precision process control and end-to-end digital transformation help conserve resources. The Plastic Framework brings together Beckhoff’s many years of expertise in the field of plastics machinery control and seamlessly integrates important industry-specific control functions. It is complemented by a series of dedicated framework controls that can be seamlessly integrated into the overall solution. In addition, it enables easy integration of Euromap/OPC UA. Standard sample codes for various plastics processing applications including injection molding, blow molding and extrusion simplify project planning and programming.

Since the Plastic Framework supports all common Euromap interfaces, users can exchange data between individual devices and with MES superordinate systems in a standardized way. In addition, the use of the TwinCAT Analytics data analysis tool enables central collection of process data in synchronization with the machine cycle. From this data, all required information on machining operations and equipment status can be derived to optimize productivity and energy consumption.

Beckhoff also integrates the measurement technology required for energy monitoring into its standard control technology with a wide range of I/O terminals. The range of applications for the measuring terminals includes temperature, power, current, voltage measurement as well as complex power supply monitoring or condition monitoring. The signal is sent to the controller as a raw data transmission, waiting for further processing, which means that only one control unit is required for automation and energy data collection. PC-based control technology significantly simplifies implementation and reduces the effort required for retrofits.

Beckhoff’s highly dynamic and high-precision servo drive technology can better save energy and resources consumed in plastic processing. It also has advantages that traditional hydraulic solutions do not have, such as excellent controllability and higher energy efficiency. At the same time, the AM8000 rotary servo motor, AL8000 linear servo motor and the new AA3000 electric cylinder can completely eliminate the use of hydraulic components in traditional equipment or systems.
