NVIDIA HiSilicon ranks among the top ten semiconductor companies in the world for the first time!HiSilicon TSMC has the largest increase

IC Insights released the top 10 semiconductor (IC and OSD optoelectronic, sensor and discrete) suppliers by global sales in the first quarter of 2020, including four fabless companies (Broadcom, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, HiSilicon) and one Pure-play foundry (TSMC).

Among them, Intel, Samsung, and TSMC are in the top three, and Nvidia and Huawei HiSilicon are among the top ten for the first time, ranking ninth and tenth respectively.

According to IC Insights data, the top 10 semiconductor companies’ sales in the first quarter of 2020 increased by 16% year-on-year, more than double the year-on-year growth rate of the global semiconductor industry (7%).

Among them, only Micron, Texas Instruments and Broadcom saw a decline in sales in the quarter compared with the same period last year, down 12%, 7%, and 2% year-on-year respectively.

Nine of the top ten had sales of more than $3 billion in the first quarter of 2020, one more than in the first quarter of 2019.

HiSilicon and Nvidia replaced Infineon and Toshiba Storage in the top ten for the first time.

HiSilicon is Huawei’s semiconductor design arm, and more than 90 percent of its sales are owned by the parent company. Its ranking jumped from 15th to 10th, with sales of nearly $2.7 billion in the first quarter of 2020, a 54% year-over-year increase, the largest increase in the top ten.

Nvidia was ninth in the quarter with more than $3 billion in sales, up 37% year over year.

TSMC was the only pure-play foundry in the top 10, with sales up 45% year-over-year, mainly due to increased orders for 7nm application processors for smartphones from Apple and HiSilicon.

As the chart shows, HiSilicon has become an increasingly important customer for TSMC, accounting for 14% of its sales last year compared to just 5% in 2017. Interestingly, HiSilicon and Apple together accounted for 37% of TSMC’s total sales in 2019.
